6 Reasons France Is
the World Capital of
Music & Performing Arts
No country on earth combines centuries of artistic heritage, world-leading institutions, and near-free tuition the way France does. Here is why it stands apart.
Birthplace of Impressionist Music
France gave the world Debussy, Ravel, Berlioz, and Boulez. Studying music in France means immersing yourself in the very landscape that shaped modern Western music — from impressionism to spectral composition.
Paris Opera, IRCAM & Conservatoire de Paris
France is home to the Opéra National de Paris, IRCAM (the world’s foremost music research institute), and the Conservatoire de Paris — institutions with no equivalent anywhere on earth.
World-Class Performing Arts Tradition
From classical ballet (born at the court of Louis XIV) to contemporary theatre and dance, France’s performing arts heritage spans centuries. Training here means learning within a living tradition.
Near-Free Tuition at Public Institutions
Public conservatoires and universities charge as little as €243–€500 per year — regardless of nationality. A Masters in Music from CNSMDP costs less than a single semester at most US or UK institutions.
2-Year Post-Study Work Visa
France’s APS permit lets you live and work in France after graduation, with full Schengen zone access — perform, teach, or build your arts career across Europe.
Cultural Capital of the World
Paris alone has 300+ concert venues, 100+ theatres, and hosts festivals year-round. Lyon, Strasbourg, Bordeaux, and Nice each have thriving arts scenes. No city in the world offers more performance opportunities.

What Indian Students
Need to Qualify
Admission to music and performing arts programs in France is primarily audition-based. Our counsellors help you prepare and understand each school's specific requirements.
Audition / Portfolio (Mandatory)
Most conservatoire and performing arts programs require a live audition or portfolio submission. This is the primary selection criterion — your artistic ability matters more than grades. CNSMDP and Conservatoire de Lyon expect competition-level repertoire. Prepare 3–5 contrasting pieces demonstrating range and technical mastery.
Previous Training in Music / Arts
A bachelor’s degree or equivalent diploma in music, dance, theatre, or a related arts discipline is typically required. CNSMDP expects distinction-level grades (75%+/CGPA 7.5+). Conservatoire programs expect 8–10+ years of formal study. Sorbonne and Paris 8 accept 60%+ from recognized music/arts programs.
Language Proficiency
IELTS 6.0 or equivalent for English-taught programs. French language proficiency (B1–B2 level) may be required for conservatoire programs, especially at CNSMDP and Conservatoire de Lyon. Note: many conservatoire programs are taught partly or fully in French.
Work Experience
Professional performance recordings are highly valued — submit 2–3 high-quality recordings of recitals, concerts, or ensemble performances. Recital experience at recognized venues, music festival participation, and orchestra/ensemble membership significantly strengthen your application. Teaching experience in music or dance is also valued by some programs.
Documents Required
Artistic CV detailing performance history, competitions, and training background. Statement of artistic purpose (1–2 pages describing your artistic vision and goals). 2 Letters of Recommendation from music teachers or mentors. Portfolio of recordings (audio/video). All academic transcripts and diplomas. Passport copy. Competition certificates and awards if available.
Not sure if you qualify? Our counsellors assess your artistic profile and training background to recommend the best-fit schools and help you prepare for auditions.
