Overview

What is a Masters in
Architecture in France?

A Masters in Architecture in France — formally the DEA (Diplome d'Etat d'Architecte) — is a 2-year postgraduate degree that prepares you to design, build, and shape the built environment at the highest professional level.

France's architecture education is delivered through its unique network of 20 ENSA (Ecoles Nationales Superieures d'Architecture) schools — publicly funded, government-regulated institutions that produce some of Europe's finest architects. From Le Corbusier's revolutionary modernism to Haussmann's iconic Parisian boulevards, France is where architectural history was made — and continues to be made.

The French system emphasises studio-based learning, real-world projects, and critical thinking. After completing your DEA, you can pursue the HMONP year to earn your licence to practise independently — a direct, regulated pathway to becoming a licensed architect in France and across the European Union.

Why France

6 Reasons France
Is the Best Place to
Study Architecture

From Le Corbusier to Jean Nouvel, France has shaped how the world builds. Here is why studying architecture in France is a transformative decision for Indian students.

01

The Land of Le Corbusier & Haussmann

France shaped modern architecture. From Le Corbusier's revolutionary modernism to Haussmann's transformation of Paris, France remains the birthplace of movements that define how the world builds today.

02

20 National Architecture Schools (ENSA)

France's network of 20 ENSA schools is unmatched globally. These state-funded institutions offer world-class architectural education at a fraction of the cost of private schools in the UK or USA.

03

Studio-Based, Practice-Oriented Education

French architecture schools prioritise hands-on design studios, real-world projects, and mandatory internships. You graduate with a portfolio built on actual buildings, not just academic exercises.

04

HMONP — Direct Path to Practise

After your Master's, the HMONP (Habilitation) year gives you the licence to practise architecture in France and across Europe — a direct, regulated pathway that few countries offer so clearly.

05

2-Year Post-Study Work Visa

France's APS permit lets you live and work in France after graduation, with full Schengen zone access — build your career in European architecture firms before deciding your long-term path.

06

Public ENSA Fees: Just ~370-~600/Year

Public ENSA schools charge only ~370-~600 per year in tuition — making a world-class French architecture degree dramatically more affordable than the UK (~20,000+) or USA (~$40,000+).

Eligibility

What Indian Students
Need to Qualify

These are baseline criteria. Our counsellors assess your profile and portfolio individually and tell you exactly where you stand.

01

Portfolio + Academic Record & Accepted Degrees

A strong design portfolio is the most critical component. Bachelor's degree in Architecture (B.Arch), Interior Design, Urban Planning, or related design fields accepted. ESA Paris and top ENSA schools expect 70%+ (CGPA 7.0+). Other ENSA schools work with 60%+. Your portfolio should showcase creativity, spatial thinking, and technical drawing skills.

02

English Proficiency — IELTS 6.0

IELTS 6.0 overall (or TOEFL iBT 80+) for English-taught programs. Several ENSA schools accept English proficiency certificates from English-medium Indian colleges as waivers. No GRE/GMAT required for architecture programs.

03

No French Required for English Programs

Many architecture programs, especially at ESA Paris and select ENSA schools, are taught entirely in English. French is not mandatory for admission — though learning basic French enriches your studio experience and daily life.

04

Work Experience

Not strictly mandatory, but relevant experience — architecture internships, design studio projects, or professional practice — significantly strengthens your application. Candidates with hands-on experience in AutoCAD, Revit, SketchUp, or real-world construction projects stand out at top programs.

05

Documents Required

Statement of Purpose (1–2 pages, essay-style), 2–3 Letters of Recommendation (1 academic + 1 professional preferred), updated CV, all academic transcripts, passport copy, and relevant project portfolio. Important: Charpak Scholarship SOPs are checked for plagiarism and AI-generated content is now flagged — always write your own.

Not sure if you qualify? Our counsellors review your portfolio and academic profile to tell you which ENSA schools you can target — and how to strengthen your application.

Why StudyFrance.in

We've lived this
journey.
We walk it with you.

We've stood where you are — uncertain, hopeful, and afraid of getting it wrong.

What began as our own journey to France became a promise to guide others with honesty, not pressure. Our founders and partners don't just know about France — they live in Europe. Our co-founder pursued her Masters in France and calls Paris home today.

She didn't read about the experience online. She lived it. That means when you talk to us, you get reality — not a sales pitch built on brochures. We tell you what university interviews feel like. What the visa process actually requires. What Paris costs in January. What you'll miss about India, and what you'll love about France.

"We are always there to help or guide you — anytime — from India to France, forever."
