What is a Masters in
Psychology in France?
A Masters in Psychology in France is a two-year postgraduate degree (Master 1 + Master 2) that provides deep specialisation in clinical psychology, cognitive science, neuropsychology, social psychology, or organizational psychology.
France is where modern psychology was born. Alfred Binet developed the first practical intelligence test in Paris in 1905. Jacques Lacan revolutionised psychoanalysis from his Paris seminars. Jean Piaget, though Swiss, conducted foundational research in French institutions. This intellectual heritage runs through every psychology department in the country.
Today, France’s CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique) funds world-leading psychology and neuroscience laboratories. Students at Sorbonne, Paris Cité, and ENS have direct access to cutting-edge research in cognitive science, behavioural neuroscience, and clinical practice — at near-zero tuition cost.

the Best Place to
Study Psychology
From Binet to Lacan, France shaped modern psychology. Today, its CNRS labs, near-free tuition, and clinical training infrastructure make it a uniquely powerful choice for Indian students.
Birthplace of Modern Psychology
France gave the world Alfred Binet — inventor of the IQ test — and shaped modern psychology through Jacques Lacan and the influence of Jean Piaget. Studying psychology in France means learning where the discipline was born.
World-Class CNRS Research Labs
France’s CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique) funds some of the most advanced psychology and neuroscience labs in the world. Students gain direct access to cutting-edge research infrastructure.
Clinical Placements in French Hospitals
Clinical psychology students complete supervised placements (stages) in world-renowned French hospitals and clinics — real-world experience that strengthens both your skills and your CV.
Public Universities — Near-Free Tuition
French public universities charge only €243–€500 per year for Masters degrees. This makes a world-class psychology education from Sorbonne or Paris Cité accessible to Indian students on any budget.
2-Year Post-Study Work Visa
France’s APS permit gives psychology graduates the right to live and work in France after graduation, with full Schengen zone access — a direct path to European careers and residency.
Fraction of UK/USA Cost, Equal Prestige
A Masters in Psychology from Sorbonne or Paris Cité costs under €1,000 total — compared to £12,000–£25,000 in the UK or $30,000–$60,000 in the USA. The research quality and global recognition are equivalent.

What Indian Students
Need to Qualify
These are baseline criteria. Our counsellors assess your profile individually and tell you exactly where you stand.
Academic Score
Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Social Sciences, Neuroscience, or a related discipline. Sorbonne and ENS expect 70%+ (CGPA 7.0+). Université Paris Cité and Université de Strasbourg accept 65%+. Other public universities work with 60–65%+. Some research-track programs accept strong profiles from adjacent fields like cognitive science or philosophy.
Research Proposal
For research-track Masters (M2 Recherche), a research proposal or statement of research interest is required. ENS and Sorbonne weight the proposal heavily. Clinical tracks require evidence of relevant coursework and supervised experience.
English Proficiency
IELTS 6.5+ (no band below 6.0) or TOEFL iBT 90+ for English-taught programs. ENS expects IELTS 7.0. English-taught programs are available but limited — Université Paris Cité, Grenoble Alpes, and ENS offer the most options. French-taught programs require DELF B2/TCF B2.
Work Experience
Not mandatory but highly valued. Research assistant experience in psychology labs, clinical observation hours, or supervised fieldwork significantly strengthen your application. Experience with statistical tools (SPSS, R) and data collection methods is especially valued for research-track programs. Volunteer work with mental health organizations or NGOs also adds weight.
Documents Required
Statement of Purpose (1–2 pages outlining research interests and clinical/academic goals), 2 Letters of Recommendation (1 academic + 1 from research supervisor preferred), updated CV highlighting research experience and publications, all academic transcripts, passport copy, and any relevant research papers or clinical case study reports. Charpak Scholarship SOPs are checked for plagiarism — always write your own.
