6 Reasons France Is
the World's Best Place
to Study Design
No country has shaped global design culture more than France. Here is why studying product and interior design in France is a decision that transforms your career.
Global Capital of Design
France is the birthplace of Art Nouveau, Art Deco, and modern industrial design. From Philippe Starck to Le Corbusier, the world's most influential designers emerged from French design schools. Studying here means learning where design history was written.
Home to Maison & Objet
Paris hosts Maison & Objet — the world's largest design and interior fair. Students at French design schools attend, exhibit, and network with global design firms, luxury brands, and manufacturers twice a year.
Mandatory Professional Internships
French design programs mandate 4-6 month internships at leading studios, luxury houses, and design firms. You graduate with real European professional experience — at firms like Hermes, Roche Bobois, or Philippe Starck's studio.
Public Schools at Near-Zero Tuition
France's elite public design schools — ENSCI, ENSAD, Ecole Boulle — charge as little as euro243-euro600 per year. These are among the world's best design institutions, accessible at a fraction of UK or US costs.
2-Year Post-Study Work Visa
France's APS permit gives design graduates the right to live and work in France for 2 years after graduation, with full Schengen zone access — launch your European design career from Paris, Lyon, or Marseille.
Luxury Industry at Your Doorstep
France is headquarters to LVMH, Hermes, Chanel, and Cartier. Product and interior designers who study in France have direct access to internships and careers in the world's most prestigious luxury houses.

What Indian Students
Need to Qualify
Design admissions in France are portfolio-driven. Our counsellors help you build a portfolio that meets French school standards.
Portfolio (Mandatory)
A strong design portfolio is the single most important element — no portfolio, no admission. ENSCI-Les Ateliers and ENSAD expect 20–25 projects showcasing design thinking, process sketches, material explorations, and finished work. Strate and Ecole Camondo accept 15–20 projects. Include physical prototypes or 3D renders where possible.
Design Aptitude Test / Interview
Most French design schools require a creative aptitude test, design exercise, or personal interview. ENSCI and ENSAD have multi-round selection including on-site workshops. Schools assess your visual thinking, spatial awareness, material knowledge, and motivation for design. CGPA of 65%+ (6.5+) expected; ENSCI/ENSAD prefer 70%+.
English Proficiency — IELTS 6.0
IELTS 6.0 or equivalent for English-taught programs. Parsons Paris expects IELTS 6.5+. French language is NOT required for English-medium programs. Many schools offer free French courses alongside your degree to help you settle in.
Work Experience
Design portfolio is mandatory and must demonstrate real-world design projects. Professional internships at design studios, architecture firms, or product companies add significant value. Experience with materials, fabrication processes, or user research is highly regarded. Freelance or personal design projects also count — document your process thoroughly.
Documents Required
Design portfolio (PDF, 15–25 projects with process documentation), Statement of creative purpose (1–2 pages), 2 Letters of Recommendation (1 academic + 1 from design mentor/employer preferred), updated CV highlighting design tools (Rhino, SolidWorks, Adobe Suite), all academic transcripts, passport copy, and any competition entries or exhibition participation records.
Need portfolio guidance? Our team reviews your portfolio, identifies gaps, and helps you present your work in a way that meets French design school expectations.
